In November, 14th, 1898 the Giljak made its first sea gate and moved to Kronstadt.
The beginning of the Russian-Japanese War caught the gunboat in Port-Arthur. In January, 28th, 1904 during the battle with the main body of the Japanese Fleet it was for some time under the fire of the enemy ships but after several ineffective shots it escaped from the fire and moved to the inner harbor.
After one week Giljak covered the installing of the mine defence on the way to Port-Arthur. Already at the end of the siege of Port-Arthur (in November, 25th, 1904) the boat sank on the inner harbor because of the enemy s shells.
